Elizabeth Perkins was born to concert pianist & drug treatment counselor Jo Williams and her writer-husband James Perkins. Perkins is of Greek and American descent. Her parents divorced when she was three years old. Elizabeth Perkins after graduating from Northfield Mount Hermon School enrolled herself at the Goodman School of Drama to study acting for three years.

Elizabeth Perkins made her debut in acting with a stage play Neil Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" in 1984 and went on to act in theater production companies like Steppenwolf Theater, New York Shakespeare Festival, Playwrights Horizon and the Ensemble Studio.
